God Can Give Me Self-Control!
Now we are children of God . . . when he appears, we shall be like him . . .
1 John 3:2
Maybe you know someone who gets angry and hits people or says mean things to hurt them. Maybe you know someone who can't quit playing a game or reading a book when it's time for bed. These people are letting their feelings control what they do. They do not have self-control.
Self-control is a part of the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). It's something God the Holy Spirit wants to bring out in your life. You read about it earlier in this devotional book. Self-control means that you take charge of your thoughts, feelings and actions instead of them controlling you. You handle anger without hurting anyone. You can stop playing or reading because you know you need the right amount of sleep.
God wants you to be able to control yourself. Then, He can use you to serve Him better. You will also be better able to help others. Maybe someone will ask how you learned to have self-control. You can say that it is the Holy Spirit who helps you because you are a Christian. You might then be able to tell that person about Jesus. Are you allowing God to develop self-control in your life?
