Who Is Your Master?

By Steve Petroelje

Read: Matthew 6:19-24

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (v. 21)

God is our master and anything that captures the attention of our heart more than the Lord is an idol. Money and the things it buys can quickly tempt us to break the first commandment. An overemphasis on such things will distract us from the greatest treasure: Jesus Christ. Jesus reminds us that our focus should not be on stuff that can be lost or stolen and that will eventually turn to rust. Our focus should be on things that last, things that are eternally important, such as God’s kingdom and righteousness (6:33).

When God is our master, he is our first love. We are his children and long to be faithful stewards. Imagine if your home or business suddenly burned to the ground, destroying everything inside. There would undoubtedly be great physical loss. But think about the valuable things in your life that cannot be lost to fire. Might those be the most valuable treasures your heavenly master has entrusted to your care? Remember: No one can serve two masters. You can’t serve both God and money. That’s not a thought or suggestion: it’s a hard fact.

Prayer: Help me, Lord, to store up treasures in heaven. Amen.
