Wisdom's Starting Block

By Chic Broersma

Read: Proverbs 2:1-15

"So now you can pick out what's true and fair, find all the good trails!" (v. 9 The Message)

The book of Proverbs doesn't thunder from the mountaintop like Moses with the Ten Commandments in hand. There is nothing as shocking here as some passages in the prophets, like Ezekiel lying on his side for a year staring at a map of Jerusalem (Ezek. 4:4) to symbolize the message of God's judgment. Yet at the end of the day the Law, the Prophets, and Proverbs all agree that the fear of the Lord--living with awe and reverence before God--is the beginning of wisdom.

Proverbs assumes the gracious salvation of God that Christians celebrate each Sunday in worship. But its special concern is with watching Joe and Jane believer as they leave church, go out with the kids, or settle into work on Monday morning. It's in the marketplace of life where we will bring credit or discredit to our Lord. It's while we are writing reports or relaxing with friends that God will be seeking to educate us in his ways.

Will your behavior today follow the trails of what is true, and fair, and good?

Prayer: Lord, help me to live so my weekdays square with Sunday worship and bring honor to your saving power. Amen.
